A few days before the end of last year, Silistra Mayor Alexander Sabanov appointed veterinarian Radko Slavov to the position of head of the municipal radio center.
Prior to that, Dr. Slavov had been the manager of the municipal shelter for stray animals for a year.
In his new journalistic position, he has been appointed on a permanent contract and is responsible for the overall management and media production of the municipal cable radio station (radio center).
Slavov is from Dulovo and has experience in the field of veterinary medicine but has never worked in journalism.
Who is Radko Slavov
Dr. Slavov became known from an investigation by “Za Istinata” (For the Truth) into violations and abuses of land from the state land fund, which he uncovered while he was director of the Regional Directorate of Agriculture in 2022, appointed during the administration in which the BSP participated. His reports led to investigations into the tenders conducted by the former director of the regional directorate, Ginka Kateva. It then became clear that violations had been committed for years in favor of the agricultural producer and regional coordinator of GERB, Todor Todorov. Subsequently, investigations were organized into the tenders conducted under his management, and five employees were dismissed for helping him with the revelations.
After leaving the agricultural service, in 2024 Radko Slavov was appointed by the new mayor as manager of the Municipal Shelter for Stray Animals, where he held the position until his retirement at the end of this year.
According to sources of “Za Istinata” in the municipality, the appointment as head of the radio center is the result of political agreements on the distribution of municipal posts between the mayor and the Bulgarian Socialist Party, with which Dr. Slavov is associated.
In the 2023 local mayoral elections, the BSP officially supported Alexander Sabanov’s candidacy for mayor, after which he was given the position of deputy mayor for humanitarian activities in the municipality, which was held by the regional chairman of the party. It is precisely this portfolio that includes the activities of the radio center in Silistra.
The municipal radio center in Silistra broadcasts on the city’s cable network in the seven municipalities of the region from Monday to Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. It currently employs three full-time staff members with employment contracts, as well as several freelance contributors. The total amount for the maintenance of the radio staff for 2025, which is paid from local taxes and fees, is BGN 72,965.
Until now, the position of head of the radio center in Silistra has been held by journalists. Among them are Katya Morova, Rumyana Gidolova, Valentin Chernev, and Milen Milushev.
